Tax on Obesity? Well, what are your new year's resolutions?

I think this is a great idea.

After all, no one "Must" drink sugared soda. And ... I find it hard to believe that the quantity is only 5 cans per week.

New York appears to be on it again. My friends from the NY area tell me (I haven't corroborated it, but then I don't need to) - that a pack of cigarettes there costs $9, which would be - you do the math - $90 for a carton?? One won't get any sympathy. No one needs to smoke, like they do to eat. We know it is uhealthy - but then the risk of smoking is know, and all who smoke are already amply "penalized" -- by taxes on the cigarettes, restricted in where they can do it, ANDd by the insurance industry.. Which obese people are not. And their costs to the healthcare system may be just as high.

We all pay for healthcare in this country - one way or another.

A few tidbits according to CNN's "Why We Need a Tax on Obesity" in an interview with the Governor of New York:

The surgeon general estimates that obesity was associated with 112,000 deaths
in the United States every year

Today, we find ourselves in the midst of a new public health epidemic: childhood obesity.

What smoking was to my parents' generation, obesity is to my children's generation.

Last year, legitimate concerns about links between consumption of fast food and the prevalence of heart disease prompted New York City to ban the use of trans fats in restaurant food.

No one can deny the urgency of reducing the rate of obesity, including childhood obesity.

Obesity causes serious health problems like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. It puts children at much greater risk for life-threatening conditions such as cardiovascular disease and cancer.

And what about adults?

If you, like so many, are trying to formulate the same New Year's Resolution for 2009 that you did for 2008, and 2007, and 2006 ... TO LOSE WEIGHT, GET IN SHAPE and reclaim your self-esteem and wellnes ... let me help you with a reading.
