James Watson, Nobel Prize (and Saturn Return)

James Watson, former Nobel Prize winner, currently under heavy fire for his allegedly "racist" comments, is 79 years old. He was born in 1928. He has therefore completed two Saturn Returns.

"Known for loving controversy," wrote one account ...

James Watson is promoting his book, "Avoid Boring People." On his path, he eschews "the boring," and certainly has walked right into his beloved controversy on this one.

At his first Saturn Return (1958), Watson was working with Crick, and Wilkins and the three were later awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (in 1962) for their research on the structure of nucleic acids. There was controversy regarding this - you can read about it just about anywhere, including on wikipedia.com.

In 1968, Watson wrote The Double Helix, one of the Modern Library's 100 best non-fiction books. He almost named it "Honest Jim" (see the theme here?) and it is described as "the sometimes painful story of not only the discovery of the structure of DNA, but the personalities, conflicts and controversy surrounding their work."

According to wik, Harvard University Press was to publish the book, and then declined and it was published by a commercial publisher, "an incident which caused some scandal."

At his second Saturn Return, in 1988, Watson was appointed Head of the Human Genome Project at the National Institutes of Health and this too involved controversy. According to wik,

He left "after conflicts with the new NIH Director. "Watson was opposed to Healy's attempts to acquire patents on gene sequences, and any ownership of the 'laws of nature.'"

Two years before stepping down from the Genome Project, he had stated his opinion on this long and ongoing controversy which he saw as an illogical barrier to research; he said, "The nations of the world must see that the human genome belongs to the world's people, as opposed to its nations." He left within weeks of the 1992 announcement that the NIH would be applying for patents on brain-specific cDNAs."

This is a man who has had great scientific achievements and contributions, both earned and awarded, amidst controversy.

We will take a look at his chart shortly to see what drives this man, and what the third Saturn Return might bring.

Hurwicz, Nobel Price, Third Saturn Return

A Third Saturn Return, A Rarity and a Beautiful One

At the age of 90, Leonid “Leo” Hurwicz has received the Nobel Prize for Economics, the oldest person to receive this honor. It occurs at his third Saturn Return, and rarely do we get to look at this phenomenon.

Saturn Returns occurs for each of us at roughly 29.5 years of age, 59.5, and 89.5. Often times of confusion and frustration, they are also opportunities to adjust one’s path in life. The more you are on your path, the easier and more productive the Saturn Returns will be. (Good to get a reading as one of them approaches!) If approached well, you learn ways to use your gifts for greater success and happiness. We are often forced to make “adult” decisions at this time, as well as having to deal with errors we have made in our path previously. Many consider it a difficult time. Actually, as we age we have an easier time with Saturn transits, and a harder time with Uranus’ transits (since it rules youth).

But back to the third Saturn Return of this inspirational man.

Leo Hurwicz was born in 1917 and received his LL.M. (master of laws degree) from Warsaw University, Poland in 1938. Was this to be his destiny in life? No, in 1939 he was studying at the London School of Economics, and by the time of his first Saturn Return he was already working in his chosen field of economics, with several publications in the pipeline (first came out in 1944).
Hurwicz’ life was not an easy one. His Jewish family was displaced to Moscow a few months before the October Revolution, and then returned to Warsaw. According to wikipedia, “After the start of the Second World War, he was forced to move to Portugal, and finally to the United States. When Hitler invaded Poland, Hurwicz became a refugee and continued his studies at Harvard and the University of Chicago. His parents and brother fled Warsaw only to be arrested and sent to Soviet labor camps.”

At the time of his second Saturn Return, 1977, Hurwicz was teaching at the University of Minnesota, where he taught for more than half a century (since 1951), and was named Distinguished Fellow of the American Economic Association.

Hurwicz continued his work, and also his dedication to teaching and helping others. In the 50s, he worked with Kenneth Arrow, who became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Economics prize (in 1972). Later, he was the graduate advisor to Daniel McFadden, who received the Economics prize in 2000.

Hurwicz remained steadfast on his path of studying Economics, teaching it, and fostering the growth of others. According to Minnesota Public Radio, he is “known as a gentle and supportive soul with a demanding intellect.” One of his colleagues, V. V. Chari described him as “humble.” “He treated everybody as his intellectual equal, even though the vast majority of us were not.” Chari said Hurwicz’ experiences and his ability to connect with ordinary people shaped his high-performing intellect.”

U of M President Robert Bruininks said Hurwicz characteristically downplayed his own accomplishments. He also described him as a “very humble person” who was deeply interested in teaching and his students. He described him as “a wonderful, gracious colleague. But through his work, he has had a profound impact on the study of economics around the world."
And so, at his third Saturn return, Hurwicz received the Nobel prize.

By the time of the third Saturn Return, the person has had three full passages of Saturn through their birth chart, and has therefore had three full opportunities to grow, to learn, to produce, and to mentor others … and to correct anything needing correcting. A smooth flow here, and typically, when learning of the award, Hurwicz brought it all together. “I really didn’t expect it,” he said. “There were times when other people said I was on the short list but as time passed and nothing happened I didn’t expect the recognition would come because people who were familiar with my work were slowly dying off.”

He added, “I realize there’s a limit to how many names they can put on a prize, but I just wanted to stress it’s not just my own accomplishment but the help, collaboration from these many other people.”

To bring it all around – the man, his career, his relationships, his life and his 3 Saturn Returns -- Hurwicz said in a telephone interview with the Nobel folks,

"I hope that others who deserve it also got it, and that of all applications of mechanism design he was most pleased to see it inform welfare economics.” (wikipedia.com)

Doris Lessing, Nobel Prize Winner

Doris Lessing is approaching her third Saturn Return. She is 88 and, as you know, just received the Nobel Prize for literature. According to wikipedia, Lessing is "only the eleventh woman to win the prize in its 106-year history, and also the oldest person ever to win the literature award."

At her first Saturn Return, she divorced for the second time (in rapid succession), never to marry again. She began writing in earnest.

Her second Saturn Return didn't bring much change, as happens when you are on your path to begin with, but she did move ahead into what she considered her most important work. She was writing in the Sufi theme, exploring science fiction, and doing the Canopus series, which she considered her most important work.
